Baby Clothes Basics - Needs and Proper Care

By Paul J Easton

If you are a first time parent to-be, there are numerous tasks that must be accomplished before your new baby's arrival. One important, and fun "labor of love" is purchasing baby clothing. However, with such a large selection of baby clothing, you may be asking yourself which of these adorable little items are essentials. This is crucial information to know, as well as their proper care.

Onesies

"Onesies" are basically baby t-shirts and are a necessary baby clothing purchase. To keep the onesie from creeping up and exposing your baby's belly, most onesies have easy close snaps. They can be worn alone or as an undergarment. Onesies, also known as rompers, come in basic white, colored or patterned varieties. For your basics, you should have between 5 to 10 onesies.

Sleepers

Sleepers are one-piece items with long legs and long or short sleeves. They usually have snaps down the legs for easy accessibility for late night diaper changes.

When preparing your basics, you should have between 5 to 8 baby sleepers. These are necessary as it is recommended that a newborn not sleep with thick blankets. This could inadvertently cause suffocation. The best material for both your baby's warmth and comfort are cotton or fleece sleepers.

Baby Socks

For your baby's requirements, you should purchase between 6 to 8 pairs of baby socks. Although socks are not required in warmer weather, they should be worn if taking your little one outside in chilly temperatures. They are also indispensable at night if your baby is wearing a sleeper without feet.

Baby socks are made of either thick or thin weaves. You should purchase a combination of both, as thin socks are better if your baby is to wear shoes.

Hats

Hats are baby clothing essentials for your little bundle. When taking care of your newborn, it is important to keep them adequately warm. Newborns often have difficulty regulating their body temperature and much of their heat escapes through their head.

It is recommended that your newborn wear a hat through his or her first month of life. After that, it is not as important unless you are taking them outside on a chilly or cold day. For this purpose, you should have 1 or 2 fairly snug, hats for your baby.

Proper Care for Baby Clothing

When caring for baby clothing, there are two schools of thought. The first is that your little bundle of joy's clothes should be washed in special detergents to alleviate the risk of skin allergies. There are numerous varieties of mild laundry soaps that are scent and dye-free. Many of these detergents are aimed at the baby market, such as Dreft that boasts "A gentle clean. Just for baby".

The other school of thought does not believe that "gentle" laundry soaps are required for baby clothing. If your baby's skin does not react adversely to certain detergents, then a special detergent is not necessary.

Stain Removal

Your bundle of pink or blue will not think twice about staining their cutest outfits. Certain formulas, baby food and stains caused by leaking diapers are often difficult to remove from baby clothing. If pretreated before washing, some of the most stubborn stains can be eliminated, leaving the clothing both clean and in pristine condition. One tried and true stain remover is Oxi-Clean. You may want to "audition" or try different stain removers to find the one best suited for your laundry needs.

Wash New Clothes Before Wear

Before dressing your baby in new clothes, it is essential that you wash them first. Although baby clothing may look fresh and clean on department store hangers, many have come into contact with dirt, little four legged creatures and bugs during the shipping and packaging process.

Minor skin irritations may occur from sizing placed on many pieces of baby clothing. Sizing is used to keep items looking nice until they are purchased.

Getting prepared for your little one's new arrival is both a joyous and stressful time. Knowing what baby clothing is essential in your little one's layette and how to properly care for their clothing is one of the many tasks that lay before you. Knowledge is power and being prepared is half the battle.

Use Common Sense When Shopping For Baby Girl Dresses

By Meg M

Anyone who has a baby girl dreams of their little angel in a gorgeous frilly baby dress. After all the dresses look so adorable! Before you go and lay down a small fortune on a wardrobe full of baby girl dresses take some time and consider the child.

There are so many baby girl dresses available that it can make your head spin and it can be a real challenge to find the right kind of baby girl dress for your little girl. Considering the style and the beauty of a baby dress is only a small part of choosing a great baby dress for your little girl. You should consider comfort and durability as well. No matter how cute a little girl’s dress is, it won't make up for an unhappy or uncomfortable child.

A lot of baby girl dresses do not take the comfort of the child into consideration. The dresses for babies may be enchanting to the adult eye but they are not enchanting to a baby girl's sensitive skin. Rough and or stiff fabrics that do not move with the child can lead to an unhappy ordeal. If the fabrics on the baby girl dresses feel rough to your skin, they will feel even rougher on your baby's soft skin.

Stiff lace and tight elastic will leave tell tale signs that the baby dress is uncomfortable. You will most likely see markings and indentations on your child's skin when she wears some styles of baby girl dresses. Those uncomfortable factors can be searched for while you shop for baby dresses. Check all around the arms, the neck and waistband for elastic or lace that might be too tight or too stiff. This is just a good practice to always keep in mind when you shop for baby girl dresses.

Many parents learn this lesson the hard way. They hastily go out and buy the most charming baby girl dress that they can find. They never give the baby girl's comfort any thought. They put their baby girl into this charming dress and then they wonder why she struggles, cries, and won't sit still. This scenario usually happens when you have put the frilly baby girl dress on your child for a special occasion. Such as picture taking, weddings, birthdays, etc. What was supposed to be a special occasion turns into an uncomfortable situation for everyone.

So if you must, go ahead and buy the most beautiful baby girl dresses that you can find. Maybe you can get a cute picture for the photo album. Just realize that your baby probably won't feel the same about the fancy baby girl dresses as you do.

Baby Clothes

By William Brister

Baby shopping is fun and you want to buy all those cute and adorable little outfits that you see in shops. But it is imperative to think wisely and buy only those things that you will definitely need. Lets take a look at the essential clothing the baby will require from his birth up till the time he is a few months old.

The first thing to remember is that a baby’s skin is soft and sensitive and harsh and rough seams may cause itching, burning and discomfort. Thus, for everyday wear, it is recommended that you choose soft, roomy durable clothes, which though may tend to be more expensive than less well made clothes, are safer and better for your baby’s comfort. Also, the more durable they are, the more they will last and the fewer you will have to buy. Always buy slightly bigger sizes as babies tend to grow really fast.

One-piece outfits
These are convenient and comfortable for both you and the baby. Once you have popped this outfit on the baby, you are done with the hassle of adjusting while the baby is free to wiggle and wave his limbs easily. For ease and comfort look for jumpers that have a snap button down the front or on the inside of the leg. These are especially good for a crawling baby. The snaps should hold and close well and ensure that the outfit opens at the bottom for easy diaper change.

Shirts and leggings
Cotton T-shirts and turtlenecks with snaps at the neck allow the garment to slip easily over your child's head. Undershirts form an extra layer to keep the baby warm. The one-piece style that snaps at the crotch is popular baby wear. Separate legging or pants allow you to change one piece of dirty clothing without putting on a whole new outfit. Stretchy material fits best over a baby's big belly and tends to be more comfortable.

Cardigans, sweaters and sweatshirts
Button-up or zippered sweaters and sweatshirts are more popular because they're easy to put on and take off. Often children do not like their heads to be shoved in through narrow neck holes. Buying bigger sized sweaters with loose armholes and zippers or snap buttons makes more sense.

Fleece jackets
The best way to keep your baby warm and protect him from the cold is to make him wear fleece. It comes in a variety of styles, from one-piece suits for babies to jackets for older children. These are also available with hoods to protect the head and the ears from cold winds.

Hats and mittens
In the summer you will require a broad-brimmed sun hat to protect the baby from sunstroke and in winter, one that covers the ears well from the cold. Some hats have a string at the bottom to tie under the chin ensuring that they stay on the baby’s head. Mittens for babies are shaped like bags with a drawstring at the bottom, making them much easier to get on and off the little hands.

Socks, booties and shoes
You'll need socks for the indoors and booties that can be tightly tied for outdoor wear. Typically babies only start wearing shoes after the age of one. Some paediatricians recommend waiting until your child can walk steadily, as shoes can interfere with their motor development. Shoes should be bought from a specialized children’s store as it will enable you to get good advice on which shoes are most comfortable, what size to buy, and whether the shoe allows adequate room for growth. Until your baby's walking well, cover his feet with socks or booties that hold firm and prevent the baby from slipping.
